  • Reason and Persuasion contains three Plato dialogues - Euthyphro, Meno, Republic Book I - translated by Belle Waring; with extensive commentary and illustrations by John Holbo. It is suitable as an introductory textbook but we hope more advanced students of philosophy and Plato will get something out of it as well. The 4th edition is substantially revised and improved.

  • John Holbo is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the National University of Singapore.

    Belle Waring received an MA in classics at the University of California, Berkeley.

    They are married and live in Singapore with their two daughters.

  • You can download free PDF's here. You can view the whole book in a nice, online viewer here (Issuu). Issuu has a pretty good iPad app. Very simple, free and no log-in required.

Reason and Persuasion On Issuu

This has actually been available for a while but I guess I forgot to mention it on the site. I've uploaded the book to Issuu. Issuu provides a fine online reading experience. It also allows you to embed the book - or a specific page from the book - on a page of your own. I use this for my teaching and you can, too. (If it's not immediately clear how you can clip stuff for your own use, try clicking the read cross icon you should see in the upper right of the reading area. You'll figure it out.)
